On the second day drive straight to Mazatlan. Do not stop in Culicacan which is off the highway and said to be very dangerous. It is rumored to be a drug lord hangout. We have never stopped there because of the reputation so I can not give any recommendations. Mazatlan is a large colonial city and has numerous places to stay, great restaurants, and many interesting things to see if you are staying for a couple of days. It is a 270 mile drive from Los Mochis and 370 miles from Navajoa.
On day three you drive from Mazatlan to Tepic. Try to do this during mid-week and early in the day as the roads can be very busy. It is approximately 200 miles from Mazatlan to Tepic. The beginning of the journey is very east. There are two lane cuotas (toll roads). After the first 100 miles the next hundred are much more difficult. They are currently working on this road and upgrading it. Currently it is a non toll road with a lot of truck traffic that is very slow. From Friday to Monday there is a lot of weekend traffic from Guadalajara. People coming back from a weekend at the beach. Be very careful on turns in the road as it is not uncommon for people to pass on curves or going over a hill. There are no shoulders on the road.
From Tepic to Guadalajara it is all four lane toll roads. This is the most expensive part of the trip but most people agree, the money for the toll roads is well worth it. You should have no problems on this stretch of the road. Once you reach Guadalajara take the Periferico also known as the Autopista. Watch for the Hewlett Packard building, then the Lala plant (Lala is the brand name of milk here), and start to get over into the right hand lane and watch for the Chapala & Airport signs. Once you are on the road to Chapala you are home free. The trip from Mazatlan to Ajijic can be done easily in 7 hours. Should you get lost in Guadalajara just pull over, grab a taxi driver and ask him to take you to the Guadalajara - Chapala highway, or the airport. One sits in the cab the other follows.
